Ferrari's newest entry-level GT convertible demands that you live in the moment.

If you ever find yourself stuck behind pedestrian traffic on a Greek mountain road in a Ferrari Amalfi Spider, use the moment as an introspection checkpoint. Ask yourself things like "How deep is my capacity to feel?" and "How sharply honed are my emotional antennae?" Cruising behind a tired Seat Ibiza at 37 mph, you can drop the top, flip the manettino to Comfort, and use the Amalfi's cabin as a leather-laden barometer for your self-assessment. If the firm embrace of beautifully upholstered sport seats and the tactile precision of expertly milled switchgear aren't enough to set your dopamine receptors alight, you're probably not living fully in the moment.

Unlike some of Ferrari's mightier steeds, presence is all that the Amalfi Spider truly asks of you. It inherits that trait from its predecessors, which include the Roma most recently, the Portofino before that, and the California originally. As the latest in Ferrari's open-top, front-engine V-8 GT lineage, the Amalfi isn't a scarlet streak set to max attack. Sensory pleasure is its main objective, and that's exactly what the least expensive and least powerful model in the prancing horse stable should strive to deliver.

Despite its position in the hierarchy, the Amalfi Spider doesn't look or feel like a car of leasts. Its silhouette is so achingly beautiful it should be carved in marble; we're particularly drawn to the side profile, where its contoured body lines flow freely into rear fenders that flex like the muscular thighs of Renaissance statuary. The designers took special care to have the five-layer soft-top roof perfectly mimic the shape of the coupe's slippery lid, preserving the Spider's proportions and balancing its visual weight. A case can be made that the shark-nosed Roma is more classically stylish from head-on, but the Amalfi still brings an organic harmony that is lost on other models that take function far more seriously than form, like the 849 Testarossa.

The cabin is a world of satisfying tactile experiences. Grab the thin-rimmed wheel, and your palms delight in premium cowhide. Physical buttons have replaced the Roma's touch-capacitive controls, which makes menu searching and cruise-control setting more intuitive and easier to manage at speed. There is still a heavy emphasis on tech inside, and the now-10.3-inch infotainment display is nestled just above the center console to remove some visual clutter and free up the driver's sight line.

Alcantara and brushed aluminum abound, and pressing the key fob firmly into its rectangular home in the center console feels like an occasion no matter how many times you do it. The same can be said for thumbing the physical start button, which stirs the twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8 to life in its resting place behind the front axle.

The baritone rumble of the flat-plane-crank V-8 is nice from a tonal perspective, but it takes some serious prodding to get the Amalfi to truly come alive. It only does so in the final quarter of the rev range, staying subdued up until that point. Output remains the same 631 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque as in the Amalfi coupe—19 horsepower more than in the Roma Spider—which Ferrari claims is enough to reach 60 mph in a hair over three seconds. You won't find 296 or 12Cilindri levels of firepower here, but planting your right foot still summons a seemingly bottomless well of thrust as the decibels climb and you work your way up to a 7500-rpm redline and push on toward a claimed top speed of 199 mph. When you pull on the carbon-fiber paddles nestled behind the steering wheel, the Amalfi's eight-speed dual-clutch automatic is eager to swap cogs and does so with impressive fluidity.

The V-8's docile side is a strength on highways and sleepy coastal roads, where it fades into the background and works in unison with forgiving magnetorheological adaptive dampers to shield occupants from any uncouth disturbances. Even in Sport mode, the Amalfi's ride remains plush but poised, devouring pitted roads without drama. When it's time to let the outside in, Ferrari says the powered top opens in just over 13 seconds at the flip of a switch, and a wind deflector that doubles as the rear seatback keeps cabin turbulence to a minimum.

Top-down cruising might be the Spider's forte, but once the traffic cleared and we finished taking in the cabin, narrow ribbons of high-elevation road above the Greek coastal town of Agioi Theodoroi proved to be the perfect playground for flexing the Spider's dynamic muscles. Ferrari says that the Amalfi was developed to be beginner-friendly, but 631 horsepower delivered to the rear wheels demands your full attention regardless of skill level.

Heavy stabs at the throttle will cause the rear end to break loose, though you always feel firmly in control thanks to a stability-control system that keeps things in check while still allowing for some sideways antics. The Amalfi's steering instills even more confidence. It is fingertip-light but imbued with heaps of feel, transmitting road texture directly to your hands and keeping you intimately connected to the front tires. The chassis is nicely balanced, with the convertible's weight dancing around its center point, making handling predictable and poised. Even still, there are other safeguards to help the uninitiated: A active rear wing cycles through three positions to help keep the rear wheels planted and improve high-speed stability.

No pricing information has been given for the Amalfi Spider yet, but it will likely fetch a chunk of change heftier than the coupe's. The Amalfi might occupy the lowest rung on the prancing horse pricing totem pole, but nothing about it feels entry-level. Ferrari has always been as much about emotion as it is about performance, and the Amalfi Spider manages to walk the tightrope between the two better than most of the other grand tourers in its segment. There's no lack of raw speed here, but if anything, the Amalfi's greatest achievement is making you slow down long enough to notice everything.

Headshot of Austin Parsons

Austin's car fixation began at a young age and at 1:64 scale. Eventually, Hot Wheels weren't cutting it anymore, so he developed an obsession with his father's full-sized 1965 Ford Mustang instead. Desperate to break into the automotive industry, he bartered his way into a job at a local BMW dealership by promising to stop hurling nerdy technical facts at the salesmen who came into the neighboring coffee shop where he worked. That was also around the time when he started writing automotive reviews, news articles, and technical guides for a number of local and international publications. Now at Car and Driver, Austin brings more than 10 years of experience in the automotive industry and an all-so-common love-hate relationship with German engineering to the table.
